Getting the Job!!

Hello all, my name is Michael Strahan, no not the guy from the New York Giants or Subway commercials. You see me here as strahonsolo.
So why are we all here in college? I’m sure there are some who are here just to become well rounded people, however, most of us are here to get a better, higher paying job. How should we go about getting these better, higher paying jobs after college (which I’m sure most all of you will start before you graduate)? Well there is more than one way to do it: we could “pound the payment” and put our face in front of anyone who’s willing to let us in the door; we could use a job search website; look in the newspaper want ads; or stand on the corner and wait to see who comes down the street and hires us. Although the last idea seems like the easiest, and may produce the best story to tell your grandchildren, I doubt that it will be the most effective or expedient way of getting a job. This leaves us with going door to door or using a jobs website. So we need to have the right stuff.
Part of the right stuff is you resume. Think of your resume as a reflection of the professional you on paper. Would you ever go into an interview wearing clothes that where to old and don’t fit you correctly? If the answer is not “no”, you might be one of those who came to college just to become enlightened. For the rest of us, if you wouldn’t wear old and ill fitting clothes, why would you present a resume that is?
The best resumes, like clothes, are tailored to the job. So the first thing we would like you to do is find a job posting for your “dream job”. Don’t worry if you don’t know what your dream job is, I have no idea what mine would look like on paper. Post what tools you used to find this “dream” job. How was your search different because of your interdisciplinarity?

Thinking about Graduate school? Take a look at UCF Plan for Graduate School website. Which grad school would be your “dream” school? Why? Tell us what you think about the site.

Now that you have found your dream job it is time to go get it. This is where the resume and cover letter come in. They are usually the first, and many cases, only thing your potential new employer has to go on to know who you are. Look through the UCF Career Services website. It has a lot of information about how to write cover letters and resumes as well as other great resources for job seekers. Share your thoughts on the website. Was it helpful? Are there resources you will use? Tell us what services you think are the most useful.

Now that you have found your “dream” job and have read about resumes and cover letters, it’s time to show your wears. Write a cover letter for your chosen “dream” job. Think about what you will include and exclude. Post your cover letter. Do you think sending a cover letter via email good enough? How long do you think you should wait to contact (call, email, stop-in or park outside in an unmarked van)?

Finally, think about your resume. What are some of the ways your resume can emphasize your interdisciplinarity? Do you think an interdisciplinary resume will get noticed more or less by hiring managers?

  1. The tools I think you would need to find your dream job can be varied. You should look at your strengths and also what you are interested in especially if you are looking for your "dream" job. There are many jobs that focus on more than just one thing. There are many websites that you can type ur interests into and it shows you what career goes along with those interests. I found that my "dream" job would be being a behavioral analysis for the FBI, using both my behavioral social science interest and my criinal justice interest. When looking for my dream job since I am interdisciplinary I am looking for something that suites my interests. Since I have two main focuses I think it makes it easier because I have options.
I would like to continue going to UCF for grad school beucase I love it here and hear great things about attending grad school here. The website was helpful and answered the questions that I had concerning when I would have to apply and what exactly the grad school process entailed.
I believe the career service website is helpful because it shows when all of the upcoming events are and gives you many tools to help you succeed, for example the practice interview program. The site is very easy to navigate around.

    Cover Letter:
    Dear Mr. XXXX,
I am applying for the behavioral analysis director position that you have available within the FBI. I have attached a copy of my resume as well as 3 letters of reccommendation. This is a great opportunity for me and I believe my educational background and my past internship experience make me suitable for this position. I am very organized and keep on top of my tasks at hand. I am a great team worker and want the best for my fellow employees and my goal is to make this country safe, doing all I possibly can to make that happen. I have complete knowledge of the criminal justice system and have worked with many different types of people wether mentally ill or incarcerated. My resume has all of my past experience if you would like further knowledge. You can reach me at any time, I am available my phone or email which are listed on my resume. Thank you for your time.
    Sincerely,
    Hialey Barraco

Sending a cover letter via email is not enough. It should be hand delivered with your resume and anything else that is necessary for the job in which you are applying for. I think after 3-5 days it is acceptable to call or email the empolyeer as a follow up.
Showing the different places you intern or volunteer or prior jobs can represent that you are interdisclipinary becasue of the many different positions you have filled. I think that depending on the job you are applying for that an interdisclipinary resume can help you becasue people like those who have knowledge in many areas and are capable of handeling different positions.

    1. Nice work. However, the cardinal rule was broken: proof read, proof read and then proof read. "I am available my phone or email..." Remember this is your one and only chance to make a first impression. I like to read my work out loud, it makes things stand out and doesn't allow your brain to fill in the gaps. How many times would you call to follow up?

    2. I think it is awesome that you want to work for the FBI, i have a friend who is working her way in to the FBI but not for behavioral analysis. Also a family friend of mine worked as a Behavioral analysis in a psych ward and she said there was never a dull moment, it has always seemed like an interesting job to me. Good luck.

    3. @ Hialey, i really lieked your cover letter and im so happy you look forward to going to grad school at UCF. It truly is a great school. I like the way you listed your skills in a matter-of-fact way, it made it really easy to read. good job!

    4. HEY Hailey !!! NICE WORK with the cover letter. Short and sweet, employeers don't have the time to run through long lists.

And you brought insight into my life, I usually just email my resume and cover letter, I never thought of hand delivering it as an option. I will try that next time.

    5. Hailey,

Nice cover letter! Sounds very professional and you get right to the point. FBI is hard work and I wish you good luck in that field. Getting a masters in that will definietly benefit you job wise. I didnt want to be an FBI agent but i did want to be a CSI agent. Then I realized I didnt like chemistry that much, haha. But best of luck! You'll do awesome!

    6. @Hailey:
I think that working for the FBI would be AWESOME! The marriage between criminal justice and behavioral social sciences would definitely give you a leg up during the screening of potential candidates. I totally agree that e-mailing your Cover Letter isn't appropriate and that delivering it by hand is the best option to make you a stand out candidate among the sea of potential employees.

  2. My dream job is to become a fashion marketer, i already knew what career i see myself in in the long run, but it took lots of talking to advisers and information searches to figure out exactly what i wanted to be when i "grew up". This career works with my interdisciplinary because my two areas of study are communications and health and my minor is in marketing. If i were to go to grad school i would be most interested in either marketing or communications. I have used the career services website many times and find it very helpful to any college student. Students can find help with their resumes, they can meet with a career service specialist to get a better understanding of which career would be best or them and best of all they can help you get an internship or even a job, isn't that what most of us came to this fine establishment for anyways? I personally think the best way to get your cover letter to a company is to hand deliver it, if you don't have that luxury then you may email it but i think the document that your future could depend on should be hand delivered. Also if you don't hear back with in a week i would either call, email or send a letter thanking the employer for their consideration and asking how the search to fill that position is going. For your resume i believe that having different interdisciplinaries on it are good because it shows you are experienced in more than just one area of study.

    Cover Letter:

    Dear Employer X:
Jacquelyn Welch from the University of Central Florida.
I have found that your company, Employer X, is currently accepting applications for various fashion marketing positions and I would like to be a candidate for the position.
As an Interdisciplinary Studies major, studying communications and health, and a marketing minor at the University of Central Florida, my education has helped me become more developed in the area of interpersonal communication, organizational skills and much more. Being a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, while being a student has also helped me develop the abilities to manage teams, meet and talk with many different people from all walks of life, obtain daily goals and multi-tasking.
I have enclosed my resume for you to review. Should you need more information, I will be more than happy to provide it. You may reach me by phone at (561)389-2082 or email at Jacquelyn.w@knights.ucf.edu. I look forward to meeting you and have a great day.

I think you have a really great start on your cover letter! I like that you mention your various areas of study and how your education will help you in your future career. Maybe you could think about including a few more specific skills and knowledge gained from your education. What about your education makes you unique?

    2. Jacquelyn,
I agree that if you can hand deliver your resume you should. I know that I'm better in person than I will ever be on paper. Personality is hard to convey in a resume, and I know that can make the difference. I think it is a definite plus that you state that you have become a better communicator. Nice work on the letter. After a week would you either call, email, send a thank you letter; or would you do all three? Would you only check on this job once after sending your resume, or check in with them many times?

    3. Jacquelyn,

Good start on your coverletter, however I think you jumped stright to the point with no intro.

  3. My dream job is to be a performance artist, or to work in any field of the arts. I realized this when I was working on a show (while trying to figure out what to major in) and my friend said, "I dont care what I do as long as I have a do somehting in the arts I'll be happy". Once she said that it hit me, every time I do a show I'm completely happy and estatic but once I stop I get depressed and I have to look for something else to do. So, I started talkig to advisors and they steered me in the direction of IDS because my interests vary. With a focus in Psychology, a focus in Physical Therapy (under education) and minors in Dance and Fitnes Training, if I chose to go to grad school I have options and not just one. Having options put me at ease because if something doesn't work out I can always chose another path still using my IDS major. I think the best way to deliver a cover letter is in person. That way they know your face, you can introduce yourself and they can get a quick feel of who you are.

I totally agree that you must deliver your cover letter in person because it is abut making anlasting impression so they remember you out of the bunch of applicants.

    2. Ashley,
Putting your face in front of people definitely gives you an advantage over those who don't. The human brain is designed to remember faces, we should all use that. My wife went to school with a woman who became a professional dancer. She has been all over the world and been in some of the biggest productions (she danced in the Super Bowl half time show with the Black-Eyed Peas). She loves her "work".

Its an admirable quality, never lose that <- so many people would love to be in that position.

  4. Hey Ashley,

Great job with the cover letter; you hit a lot of the points you want to talk about in a cover letter: experience, initiave to meet, and character traits. It's hard to get into a fake cover letter and write for a position that doesn't exist, but always mention your vision you might have and express how passionate you are. Anyone can teach the skills needed, but they're looking for the desire.

Really like you're combo you made with the areas.

  5. To find your dram job I think it has to be something your passionate about and you want to do and commit yourself too. I know that every job is going to have some aspect that may be tedious or boring but if that’s what you need to get don’t to be able to do the stuff you love then it is well worth it. I also think that variety is important and for me I would like to be able to work in a office but also in different locations. I think being interdisciplinary will make searching for a job a little easier because you have several fields you can look into. My dream job would be to work in the nutrition field. I know I would love to work with children and promoting health in the public. I am also very interested in the psychology behind weight loss and gain and the causes of eating disorders.
I have not really considered any grad schools over here in the US because my plan has always been to go back to Australia and continue or narrow my studies there. However if I was to go to grad school I would love to go to grad school in a different part of the country, because I love the diversity between states in the US.

    To Whom It May Concern,
My Name is Anita Schmidt and I am applying for the position of XXX at your company XXX. I recently graduated from the University of Central Florida as an Interdisciplinary Studies major. I have spent some time in the field in numerous internships, and I believe that this experience along with my education and passion for children’s health make me suitable for this position. I pride myself on being organized, reliable and have good communication skills especially with children and families. I have attached my resume and letters of recommendation. I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to apply for this job and would like an opportunity to discuss my skills and ambitions with you at your convenience. I can be contacted via phone on 407-350-1922 or e-mail at Schmidt.anita@knights.ucf.edu.
I hope to hear from you.
    Yours sincerely,

I think that sending your cover letter in via e-mail is not enough and it should always be accompanied by other required paperwork, resume and letters of recommendations. I think that after a week it is appropriate to contact the employer via phone or e-mail to check the status of your application.
I think that being an IDS major can really highlight what you are passionate about if you word it correctly and can definitely work to your advantage. If you show all the areas you experienced in but it also shows that you are able to look at things from different angles and use it to your advantage.

I totally agree that doing the same thing every day is not the kind of job I would want either. Or do you think that no matter who you worked around you would need a variety in location to keep you interested?

    5. @ Anita,

I agree on the part about making IDS sound like a passion instead of different disciplines. What a great twist. Employeers can see that your well rounded if you make IDS sound like something your interested in.

    6. I also agree about the passion part. It seperates you from everyone else. Instead of using well rounded I would use diverse. I dont know if its just me but I think that sounds better.

Stating that you are passionate about the position is a great thing to mention because it could be what gets you the job! Also, I really admire that you want to further investigate the psychology of eating disorders and weight loss. I have been dancing for 11 years and the one thing that I have realized is that I am surrounded by people with eating disorders every single day, and at a young age I learned to evaluate my body and spent hours in dance class perfecting a pose or a position by staring at myself in the mirror. I feel that not only is being a dancer physically demanding, but it is also psychologically demanding.

  6. To find your own dream job, you must know what you want to get out of it. I personally want to be able to know that each and every day I am making a difference in my patients lives. I want to be able to see the patient from the beginning until the end when they are recovered. My dream job would be a permanent outpatient physical therapist in my home town of Clearwater, Florida. To find your dream job the best idea would be to join the organizations that are involved with your career choice to be able to see what is available for you. The internet is also a very helpful tool to see what positions are available and where, but I do not believe you should limit your search tool to the internet. My organization I would become a member of is the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). I believe it is not more complicated to search when you have an interdisciplinary degree but it is more exciting with the endless possibilities available to you. You seem to have a more diverse and well rounded degree, so the employer knows you have got it all.
The career center service website was extremely helpful. I love how they have a bunch of helpful links with examples as well as the upcoming events that we can attend to further our success. I believe that the most useful tool is the practice interview for graduate schools. I know I will be taking advantage of that because it allows you to get out all your jitters before it really counts!
I believe you must deliver your cover letter in person that that the employer can see who you really are. You want to make a lasting impression so that after reviewing so many resumes they remember you and you stand out. I feel that 3 to 4 business says is appropriate to wait, and then you could follow up with a thank you letter for their time and consideration.
I feel that a interdisciplinary resume will get noticed more because you have more information and more education to share. It makes you a better rounded person.
    Cover Letter:
    Dear Employer X,
My name is Amanda Coultas, and I am a graduate from University of Central Florida. I discovered through APTA that you have an opening for an outpatient physical therapist that can also work weekends and I would love to be able to fill this position.
As an interdisciplinary Studies major I have mastered the areas of physical sciences, biomedical and life sciences, as well as a minor in psychology. My education has put me ahead of many others because I have been able to diversify my studies and gain as much knowledge as possible in the most relevant areas. This major has helped me become more outgoing, control time management, gave me organizational skills, as well as give me the confidence to go out in the real world and help as many patients as possible. Being a college student has helped me meet many people and deal with difficult situations while being put under pressures of time and stress.
I have enclosed my resume for you to look over. If you have any questions or like any more information I will gladly provide it to you. You may contact me through email at acoultas@knights.ucf.edu or call me at (727)-433-2388. I look forward to meeting you soon!

    1. A thank you letter is a great idea. It will remind them of you and keep you in their minds. The practice interviews are very helpful to get used to interviewing. One thing that I learned was to research the company thoroughly so I could ask the interviewer some questions. Never think of an interview as a one way street; you are interviewing the company too. Ask questions that concern you about working there. Be proactive in the interview.

Great work!

  8. I personally feel that one's dreasm job is the job that is making you the happiest at that particular point in life. For example, as an interdisciplinary studies major I have always been told that I should not focus on one career, but having multiple careers throughout my life; and I agree with that statement. The other reason why I say this is because my areas of study are behavioral and social science, dance, and fitness training; however, my dream job would to be work for TOMS Shoes. I have been working with not- for- profit organizations and I also have been fundraising for several years; and it is something that I truly enjoy. TOMS Shoes would be my dream company because they have a really great message and they are really making a difference in the world, and that is something I would love to be a part of.
I have not lookedinto any grad schools because I stated earlier I feel that I am going to be a person with many careers throughout their lifetime, so I have not looked much into grad schools. Also, I want to experience many different things and then after I figure out exactly what I want to do, then I will go to grad school. The career resources center is a great asset to UCF! They have helped so many of my friends find internships and jobs! They have many different services such as resume help, cover letter writing help, interview practice, and they can even help you find a job or internship.
Overall, I feel that having a degree or a resume that says interdisciplinary is going to be beneficial because it will show all employers and graduate schools how diverse we are as students and as people. I feel that our degree in not generic and highlights who we are as individuals.

    Dear TOMS Shoes,

I have spent a majority of my time volunteering and working with not-for- profit and fundraising organizations. I worked with The Young Dancers Foundation of South Florida Inc. spreading the joy of dance to underpriveleged children in South Florida, and I have also worked extensively with UCF Foundation at the University of Central raising academic funds for scholarships and technologic upgrades fo the University. I have helped the UCF community, I have helped South Florida, and to be honest I am ready to help the world.

My past two years as a student at the University of Central Florida I have spent my time working with the UCF Foundation raising academic funding. Over the past two years I have raised over $30,000 for the University and I know that I could raise more money and awareness for the TOMS Shoes company. I am a compassionate individual who wants to do nothing more than put my marketing and fundraising skills to use at a global level. I have attached a copy of my resume and can be contacted at (954) 651-2422. Thank you for your time and I look forward to speaking with you in the future.

    Thank you,
    Nicole Gonzalez

Also, I recently heard a lecture from David Jenks from the career resources center, who was speaking about resume writing. He said that it is acceptable to send a cover letter via email followed by a resume and even a thank you letter. However, he also stressed the importance of also hand delivering or mailing the hard copy as well. He did not mention anything about follow up phone calls, but I feel that 3-5 days is a good amount of time to wait to follow up.

Toms is a great organization and their shoes look LEGIT! I love modern non profit organizations. Have you ever heard of charitywater. They're a great company and I think you would like them also.

I read that you have been working with non profit for a while. Thats great. There is a boutique close to here in Winter Park called Bajalia . Their jewlery is to die for. But the reason why I brought them up is because I know that last semester they were looking for interns to spread the word about their organization. Bajalia goes to 3rd world countries and gets artisians to make jewlery and hand bags and I believe a part of the proceeds go to helping them.

The boutique is great. You should look into it if your interested!

    4. @Marley Jay

I will definitely look into Bajalia! It sounds like a great company with a great message and purpose. I would be thrilled to work for a company that not only helps the world, but also offers the opportunity to travel and meet people. One of my hobbies is photography and one of my ultimate goals in life is to travel and photograph people from all over the worl and publish a photo journal of how each country or place is based on the people. I feel like working for a company like Toms or Bajalia would allow me to do that.

  10. I think that your dream job is whatever position has you getting up in the morning thinking, "I can't wait to get to work today!" Finding a job that excites you, that you’re passionate about and that you have long-term dedication to is no easy feat. For me, I decided to google jobs that involved all three components of my IDS degree: Behavioral Sciences, Interpersonal Organization and Communication and Health Sciences. I've decided that I want to pursue a career that has to do with a not-for-profit organization. In high school I was involved St. Baldricks, a not-for-profit fundraising organization that searches for a cure for childhood cancer. I think I’d really like to be involved with them again in a professional capacity in the future.
If I choose to go to graduate school, I will be looking for a program that can help me excel in the field of not-for-profit work. I haven’t decided where exactly I want to go for graduate school, but I know that I want to move to the North East and there is a veritable plethora of schools to choose from up there. Having taken a look at the UCF Plan for Graduate School website, I don’t feel that I necessarily know which school is best for me, but I do feel that it was a decent resource to begin my search.
    Dear St. Baldricks:
In May 2013 I will be graduating from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, focused on Health Sciences, Behavioral Sciences and Communications. I am writing to explore the possibility of employment as an associate communications specialist in the field of Advertising and Public Relations with your company. This position at St. Baldricks offers me a chance to focus on continuing to develop and hone my skills as a communications specialist.
My studies have provided a strong foundation in communications and the health sciences and I believe this position will allow the marriage of these skills to be expertly applied to the position, as your company involves the field of health care and my degree was in part, focused in this field.
The enclosed resume will give you additional background information. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to further discuss my qualifications and career opportunities with St. Baldricks. Thank you for your consideration.
    Sincerely,
    Rachel M. Fogel
I’m hoping that working on my resume in Corner Stone will help me to showcase my skills as and IDS student. I hope to achieve a balanced resume with one third of each skill I’ve honed during my time here as an IDS student at UCF. I think that a perfectly executed IDS resume should get noticed more during the hiring process, simply because it will be different because from all the other resumes submitted.

I completly agree that a dream job is something that we look foreward to everyday. I get so bored of routine so I know that whatever career I choose in my life, it would have to be spontaeous and challenging!

I still haven't figured out exactly what position I want to do in my life but I know I will find that eventually after getting many internships.

  11. Hey Guys, great job posting about your dream job and cover letters.

I just wanted to share a little piece of advice that my teacher gave me last week.

Finding the perfect job is like finding the perfect dress. Its rare to find it on the first try, and we might not find it in one day or just in one store. We may have to try on may dresses and shop at different stores. Its with trying on each dress that helps us realize what we like on our body and what we feel best forms to our shape.

SO EXPERIENCE LIFE AND GO FIND THAT DRESS...

    1. I think the advice your teacher gave was great advice! I think so many people have there hearts set on one thing, but that's not how life works. You may have to work many jobs that aren't ideal before you can get to the one you want or you get the one you want and realize it's not what you thought it would be. So, I agree continue to look for and find the dress that fits your body best!

  12. If I was searching for, my dream job I would use monster.com to search for jobs or another online tool called Journalismnext.com. I don’t think that my search would be that different because I majored in IDS, however I do think that I would be able to search more jobs because of my IDS degree as opposed to just sticking to one type of job.

My dream grad school would be UCF. I would want to continue my education at UCF because I’ve built a lot here in Orlando and I think this would be a great market to start my career in. I think the site is very helpful. I think that it provides a lot of important information. Also, I think the career services website is very beneficial to any student seeking to find a job post-graduation. The resource I may use is the calendar of events they have. I would love to go to some of the workshops and get more information.

I am a conscientious, organized, and highly motivated student who is currently seeking new internship opportunities. My unique mix of previous work experience and my status as a University of Central Florida student in my junior year studying Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus in Communication and Creative Writing makes me an ideal candidate for an internship in the Journalism industry.
My experience in writing for The Central Florida Future, combined with my courses in journalism, have shown me that journalism is a career option I would like to explore. Although I am only a junior in college I have a very solid back ground in written and oral communication. This past summer I served as a creative writing teacher. I was able to help under privileged youth receive the extra attention they needed to enhance their writing, English, and reading comprehension skills. Furthermore, I have also worked for Sears Portrait Studios, which is where I began to build my photography skills. Through this experience I gained knowledge of how to work a camera, various editing techniques, and the important factors of shooting at different angles.

Ideally, having a hands on experience through an internship will provide me the opportunity to father enhance my skills as a journalist. It would be both mutually beneficial for the publication that I intern for and myself to receive an internship. I would have a chance to showcase the knowledge and skills that I possess, while having the opportunity to learn from seasoned professional how to become the best at what I'm extremely passionate about.
    Thank you for your time.
    Sincerely,
    Joni Fletcher

In today’s times I do think it is acceptable to send a cover letter online and I think you should way 3-5 days to contact the employer. I think the ways my resume can emphasize my interdisciplinary is to highlight the different areas of focus I have. Lastly, I think you have an equal opportunity, especially in my field. Most employers just want to see experience, so I think that my resume will be looked at and considered.
